End of Jozef Szajna International Festival ZDARZENIA

Dear All,

We would like to kindly inform you that after thirteen years Jozef Szajna International Festival ZDARZENIA from 1 January 2012 will cease to exist.

After several years of hard times, however full of ideal believes that the situation in Polish culture may improve, we came to a final decision. In the previous years we managed to keep on going deceived by the promises that the increase of financial support will happen in the near, indefinite, future. Although we succeeded in applying for a few dozen of grants, each year we could hardly close a necessary budget, having in mind that as a NGO we provided all festival events free of charge. To make a long story short, the financial resources were drastically cut down, whereas the bureaucracy unrestrainedly grew. And unfortunately, it still grows…

Please let us explain in a few words how difficult it is to keep an international event in a small town. Starting with the problems with premises and venues, reaching new sponsors, we had to depend on the fixed, insufficient grants – which made us each year to “trim our dreams” i.e. to make the whole project dependent on the meager finances. [It was also more difficult to gain EU funds for the events taking place outside big metropolitan areas]. When we add here a hysterical increase of bureaucracy, continuous change of rules and regulations which force the organizers to hire a big team which is on the other hand impossible according to the regulations concerning associations and not enough financial sources, we might picture the situation more clearly. Also please keep in mind a lower respect that the public administration staff have for the higher culture , lack of understanding for the values represented by the civilization progress and versatile international exchange regarding both ideas and human resources.

Despite a great interest showed for Zdarzenia Festival, the governors have always supported mass culture events such as fests, concerts, comedies more eagerly. Eventually, we have lost this hopeless struggle … sadly, we were not the only ones.

However we are not embittered as Zdarzenia became a great success, a space for the youngest, talented artists, Masters and critics. The Festival was always full of emotions and discussions.

During 13 editions of the festival (including so called “zero” edition) we presented 3700 artists from 24 countries such as: Armenia, Belarus, Belgium, Canada, China, Croatia, Czech, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Iran, Israel, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Serbia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland and Ukraine. We used to cooperate with 98 art schools from Europe such as: Academy Circo a Vapore from Rome, Music Academy from Prague,  Music Academy from Wroclaw,  Music Academy from Gdansk, Music Academy from Cracow, Music and Art Academy from Opava, Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow, Academy of Fine Arts in Lodz,  Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest,  Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk,  Academy of Fine Arts in Hubei,  Academy of Fine Arts in Hyderabad,  Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice,  Academy of Fine Arts in Minsk,  Academy of Fine Arts in Moscow,  Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna,  Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb,  Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam, Academy of Arts in Banska Bystrica, Academy of Arts in Belgrade, Academy of Arts in Bratislava, Academy of Arts in  Prague, Academy of Arts in Turku, Theater Academy in Rome, Theater Academy in Warsaw, European  Theatre Institute in Berlin, Film and Theatre Institute in Erewan, The Film School in Lodz, The Ludwik Solski State Drama School in Cracow, The State University in Wlodzimierz, The Russian State University in Kaliningrad, Architecture School in Paris, Ceramic School in Deruta, REDUTA Film and Theatre School in Berlin, Robert Murola School of Neaples Songs, The Art School in Iwanow, Dimitri Theatre School in Verscio, Art University in Poznan, Bolonia University, Humbolt University in Berlin, Ustia University, Theatre and Film University in Budapest,  Roma Tre University in Rome, Klaipeda University, the Puppetry Department in Bialystok,  La Cambre Fine Arts School, Academy of Art in Anhua.

We have made long- lasting relationships with European festivals – eg. Festival Dupo Mondi in Spoleto/ Italy, ITS Festival in Amsterdam, KONTRAPUNKT Festival and RomaTeatroFestival. We gained a name of an important, international event on the theater festivals’ map in Poland and Europe. We did our best to support young, promising artists. Their successes and theater careers prove that we were right.

It would not be possible for us to survive those 13 years without the financial support (although the amounts were not as high as we could dream of) from several institutions: Associazione Culturale Elsinore, Mayor of San Gemini/ Italy, Czech Center, Danish Institute of Culture,  J&S Pro Bono Poloniae Foundation, Culture Foundation, Polish – German Cooperation Foundation, Slovak Institute, International Visegrad Fund, Ministry of Culture and NationalHeritage, Pomerania government, District of Tczew Council, City of Tczew Council, City of Gdańsk Council, Hungarian Institute of Culture, Italian Culture Institute and Vistula Cities Union.

Our greatest sponsors were: Spoldzielczy Bank in Tczew, EATON Corporation, Pomerania Special Economic Area, ZUK, ZUOS and ZWIK.

We would like to extend our thanks to: our employees, member of PO-MOST Humane Integration Society, artists, consultants, critics, art schools’ governors, Partners, sponsors, friends who visited Tczew every year to celebrate ZDARZENIA with us (it is hard to mention them all). Our special thanks should go to the volunteers and the audience of Tczew who supported us so eagerly. We are sure that „the Festival’s seed” will remain in You forever.

With respect,

Artistic Directory
